males usually degenerate or are absent and parthenogenesis is common. The
phylum belongs together with e.g., Nematoda and Gastrotricha to the Aschelminthes.
r-strategya life strategy which allows a species to deal with the vicissitudes of climate and food supply by responding to suitable conditions with a high rate
of reproduction. The r refers to the intrinsic rate of natural increase in the
logistic equation dN/dt = rN(I-NIK), with N the population density and K the
carrying capacity of the environment, as determined by food, space, predation, or other things. R-strategists are continually colonizing habitats of a
temporary nature; as such, their strategy is basically opportunistic, with dispersal being a major component of their population process. At the extreme,
when colonizing an ecological vacuum and thus without density effects or
competition, the optimal strategy is to put all possible matter and energy
into reproduction, with the smallest practicable amount into each individual and to produce as many offspring as possible. R-selection thus leads to
high productivity.
Rurik Expedition (1815-1818) an early Russian round-the-world expedition
under Captain Otto von Kotzebue. Naturalist Adelbert von Chamisso made
a thorough study of coral reef structures and published a diary of the expedition.
