Nansen bottle

nacreous layer (syn. mother of pearl) the laminated inner layer of the calcareous
part of the molluskan shell, secreted by the inner mantle surface. Loose particles between the inner shell surface and the mantle will generally be covered by nacre and may result in pearls.

Nansen bottle instrument for taking water samples from the water column named
after the Norwegian explorer F. Nansen (1861-1930). The instrument, which is
attached to a steel cable, is freely flushed while being lowered, and is closed at
