Knight Errant Expedition (1880) started research on what was later named the
Wyville Thomson Ridge under C. Wyville Thomson. The presence of this
ridge from the Faroe Islands via Iceland to Greenland was suggested by the
observations made during the Porcupine Expeditions of a difference in temperature on both sides. Its presence was confirmed by soundings but bad weather
and very limited coal carrying capacity of the ship made only short cruises
possible. The work was completed by the Triton Expedition in 1882.
