Amphipoda the body is mostly depressed. The seven pairs of walking legs are
used in some species for swimming. They live terrestrial (wood-lice), in
freshwater or in marine habitats. Marine species can be detritivore, predaceous or parasitic. Example: the shore slater Ligia.
isopycnicline drawn on a map joining places of equal atmospheric density.
isostasy theoretical balance of large portions of the earth's crust as though they
were floating on a denser underlying medium. The Pratt hypothesis assumes
density variations so that areas of less dense crust rise above areas of denser
crust. The Airy hypothesis varies the thickness of crustal blocks of constant
density so that, similar to floating icebergs, thicker parts ride higher and
reach deeper. The Pratt hypothesis accounts for the elevation of mid-ocean
ridges, whereas the Airy hypothesis explains the deep-seated roots of mountain ranges. Isostasy accounts for the subsidence of areas of deposition,
whereas areas of erosion rise. ~eustasy.
isotherm line on a surface that connects points where the temperature is the
same.
isotonic two solutions are said to be isotonic when the concentrations of dissolved substances in both solutions are equal. The composition of the two
solutions may be quite different, as isotony only refers to the number of dissolved particles. If in two solutions these numbers are equal, then no net
transport of solvent will take place through a barrier which separates the
two solutions.
isotopes nuclides of the same element but with different atomic weight. This is
caused by a different number of neutrons in the nuclei, which have at the
same time an identical number of protons. Isotope concentration ratios like
160/180 and 12C/13C are applied as tools to determine various processes in
the sea, where either the ratio is shifting along the process, or one of the isotopes or both are decaying due to the emission of radioactive radiation, as
in the ratio 12C/14C. If isotopes undergo radioactive decay they are called
radioisotopes, if not, they are called stable isotopes.
