circles in the horizontal plane. These motions are called inertial oscillations
or gyroscopic waves. Their frequency, the inertial frequency, is equal to the
Coriolis parameter. The figure shows rotating currents in a progressive vector
diagram. This feature is caused by the super-position of inertial oscillations
and a weak mean current. The inertial oscillations have a period between 14
and 15 hours as indicated by the 12 hour tick marks. Based on measurements
of Gustafson and Kullenberg in the Baltic between 17 and 24 August 1933.
Inertial oscillation.
(After Sverdrup et al. 1942)
inertial subrange a range in the spectrum of turbulence connecting the lower
frequency, longer-wave part of the spectrum with that part of the spectrum
where the molecular viscosity is able to dissipate the kinetic energy of the
motion directly into heat. The lower limit of the length scale of motion is the
so-called Kolmogoroff length, the part of the spectrum at smaller scales
belongs to the viscosity subrange.
infauna -7endofauna.
IngolfExpedition (1895-1896) this Danish expedition under c.P. Wandel made in
both years during summer extensive biological and hydrographical observations including soundings and the use of drift bottles in arctic seas around
Iceland and Greenland. M. Knudsen was hydrographer/physicist, H. Hansen
and E. Wesenberg Lund were the zoologists on board.
inhibition any process that acts to restrain reactions or behavior. -7photoinhibition.
