Wallace (1823-19l3). Especially the work of the former is famous. His voyage as a naturalist on the Beagle (1831-1836) laid the foundation for his theory of the origin of species by means of natural selection published in
abridged form in 1859 and further elaborated on in books on variation of
animals and plants under domestication (1868) and the descent of man
(1870). He was an all-round naturalist who published, among other things,
on subjects such as coral reefs (1842) and the geology of volcanic islands
(1844). ~Beagle Expedition and ~biostratigraphy.
Exclusive Economic lone (EEZ)legal concept introduced by UNClOS III. It can now be
said to constitute a rule of international custom. The EEl is an area of the
sea beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea. Its breadth is not to extend
beyond 200 nautical miles from the baselines (~coastline, legal aspects), from
which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. The coastal state enjoys
certain sovereign rights over the EEl, namely: rights for the purpose of
exploration, exploitation, conservation, and management of all natural
resources of the seabed, its subsoil and of the overlying waters. The coastal
state also enjoys jurisdiction with regard to the establishment and use of
artificial islands, marine scientific research, and the protection of the
marine environment.
Exclusive Fisheries lone (EFl)zone, recognized by international customary law, in
which states may claim exclusive fishing rights up to 200 miles (including
the territorial sea). Most states have entered into agreements permitting them
to fish (at a certain charge) in the EFl of the other contracting state. The
EFl is generally taken as part of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEl).
excretion ~excretory organs, ~exudation and ~animal excretion.
excretory organs organs that are specialized in excretion, the removal of metabolic waste products. The kidney, as it occurs in higher animals, is absent in
invertebrate species. Here, many types of duct-like structures occur with a
similar function (e.g., nephroducts in Annelida, antennal glands in Crustacea),
which have in common: (a) a large surface area; (b) a well-developed blood
supply; and (c) an excretory pore which ends either in the digestive tract or
on the outside of the body wall.
exoskeleton the distinguishing feature of the Arthropoda, where the cuticula consists of chitinous material, sometimes containing calcium carbonate and
calcium phosphate (~Crustacea), which is excreted by the hypodermis, the
skin layer directly under the epidermis.
