epipelagic community
112
epipelagic community community of species and organisms living in the epipelagic zone (0-200 m, --7zonation).
epipelagic zone --7zonation.
epiphytes organisms living attached to plants, e.g., epiphytic algae on sea grass,
Bryozoa, Foraminifera.
episodic of or pertaining to, or having the nature of, an episode; incidental occasional.
epistome small, movable, lip-like lobe overhanging the mouth (in some Bryozoa).
epizoa animals living attached to other organisms, without being parasitic.
equation of state equation giving the relation between temperature, salinity and
pressure of seawater. As the required accuracy has increased since the first
determination of this equation for seawater by M. Knudsen in 1901, it has
recently been redefined. --7thermodynamics.
equatorial currents the equatorial zone is a dynamically active part of the ocean.
The equatorial currents flow in a westerly direction in a zone of about 1000
to 1500 km width, as parts of the subtropical gyres, under the influence of the
trade winds. In the zone of low winds between the trade wind belts there is an
eastward countercurrent, which for most of the year is positioned north of
the equator. In the Indian Ocean there is a seasonal reversal in this system
north of the equator, because of the reversing monsoon winds. In the equatorial zone also eastward subsurface countercurrents have been observed,
which are sometimes indicated as the Cromwell Current (Pacific) and the
Lomonosov Current (Atlantic).
equatorial wave at the equator the Coriolis force changes sign and this makes it possible for westward propagating planetary waves and zonally traveling long
waves to be trapped in a zone on both sides of the equator. Equatorial planetary waves are thought to playa role in the dynamics of the equatorial
countercurrent and of the EI Nino system.
Erebus and Terror carried the British Antarctic Expedition (1839-1843) under Sir
James Clark Ross, Ross commanding the Erebus, Francis R.M. Crozier the
Terror. The main scientific objectives were to measure the magnetic (earth) field
in the southern hemisphere and to locate the south magnetic pole. Robert
McCormick and Joseph Dalton Hooker were naturalists. The first deep-sea
soundings (> 2000 fathoms) and the first deep-sea dredgings down to 400 fathoms depth were made. Animal life was abundant but the collections were
