Damage to and protection of rubble mound breakwaters (talus breakwaters) is a
major concern. It has been said, accurately, that no sooner is such structure
completed its destruction starts. While they perform generally nevertheless well,
some major failures have occurred in various locations throughout the world
(J. De Rouck and C. P. De Meyer, 1987, Port structures. Their care and
maintenance:PIANCBull. 58, 133-168).
