A flat concrete block, the HARO®, was recently developed for protection of atsea structures against wave action. It has a large central opening and both of its
short sides are widened at the base ; comers are asymmetrically tapered in plane.
It achieves thus a high degree of porosity, when used in two layers, and good
stability. Its high porosity and lesser weight allow a 30% reduction of the amount
of required concrete. The decreased wave run-up permits a reduction in
breakwater crest height. The new units have been used in the Zeebrugge harbor
(Belgium) extension works.
