15.1 Introduction
15.1.1 Historic Dune Landscapes
Despite the fact that a large proportion of the Dutch population lives very close to
the coastal dune areas, these areas have been to date among the best-preserved
nature reserves in the country, mainly because modern agriculture was never
practiced in the dune areas. Fertile soils are found behind the dunes, where the
topography is plain and soils consist of clay or peat. However, dune areas have
