Ocean forecasting is already operational at leading meteorological agencies
around the world (including the US National Center for Environmental Prediction,
the European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecast and the UK Met Oftice).
It has been contributed to the prediction of El Nifio-La Nifia events on time scales
of several months. Among the challenges now being addressed by ocean forecasting are the extension of predictions to the coastal areas, the forecasting of chemical
elements cycling in the marine environment and the prediction of sea level changes
due to global change scenarios
The school would not have been possible without the support ofthe staff ofIMC,
in particular Dr. S. Vallerga, Dr. R. Covacci, Dr. A. Perilli, Dr. A. Ribotti, Dr. R.
Sorgente and Mr. F. Angotzi. We would like to acknowledge the skillful editorial
work of Dr. C.Cesarini of CLU srI. Last but not least, we must thank the endless
work of Dr. L. Amato who coordinated the scientific reviewing process. One of the
editors, N. Pinardi, acknowledges the support ofthe MFSPP EU contract (MAS3CT98-0171).
