remote sensing and its environmental applications, in building-up a "Mediterranean
Environment Remotely-Sensed Information Web" (MERSLWeb).
Through MERSLWeb, suitable description of existing datasets and relevant
environmental information resulting from the application of remote sensing and its
integration with conventional methods and techniques in the Mediterranean, will be:
3. organised in a standard format
4. stored in an easily accessible database
5. made available, to the general or targeted public, through the Internet
The database will be populated, controlled and continuously maintained by the
network of Centres.
2.3 Stored Information
The information to be stored, and organised relying on meta-datal structure will
answer to the following questions:
• WHAT has been done in the field of environmental monitoring in the
Mediterranean with the support of remote sensing;
• WHERE the activities have been (or are) carried out;
• WHO have been (or are) the developers;
• WHO have been (or are) the users;
• HOW this information is (or could be made) available to other researchers and
users.
In particular, it will include description of:
geographical location;
application field;
used satellite, image characteristics (date, geographical coordinates, etc.), raw
data;
used ancillary data;
methods and standards of reference;
• value-added products derived from remote sensing data (thematic observations,
classifications, multi-temporal analyses);
products derived from the integration between remotely-sensed data and other
data referring also to products processed using Geographic Information System;
availability of processed data and their characteristics;
• information providers and information users with appropriate links;
framework (national and international projects, programmes, conventions, etc.)
links to other specific websites;
etc.
The information to be selected and the meta-data structure to be used have to be
established by the actors of the network core.
I Meta-data is ancillary information characterising and describing products and data sets
