ROSELT/OSS Network in the African arid regions

- Species and varieties culti vated: agronomic characteristics; cropping techniques;
- Phytomass l :
• Air phytomass: green phytomass (at production peaks); ligneous plants (alive);
dead plants; litter;
• Phytomass used by men: harvests (seeds, grains, woods, fruits, fibers, roots,
leaves, flowers);
• Phytomass usable by domestic and salvage herbivores;
• Eventually: sub-soil phytomass.
- Pastoral values: indexes values of species of each vegetation unit according to
their importance (recovering; MS weight) in each pastoral system; translation
in terms of pastoral production and capacity of animal charge;
For biodiversity: endemic species, threatened species (unlisted ones) safeguarded
species and varieties by traditional agro-systems;
- Threat and status of conservation: current or potential threats (due to climatic
and/or anthropic factors); practices or statutory measures of conservation;
management plans for protected surfaces.
Monitoring of the fauna (salvage and domestic animal resources)
Faunistic composition; functional groups; biological characteristics of keyspecies playing a great role in the functioning of ecosystems;
- Domestic animals species and races; systems of cattle-breeding;
Animal charges (livestock versus salvage animals); relationships between animal
charges and the capacities of charge of the pastoral ecosystems;
- For the biodiversity: endemic species, threatened species (unlisted ones);
domestic races to be safeguarded;
Conservation threats and status: ongoing or potential threats; conservation
practices or measures; surfaces protected for their fauna.
Monitoring of the methods qf utilization of renewable natural resources
- List of the different current types of utilization of the renewable natural
resources: agrosystems; sedantary and transhumantal pastoralism; utilization of
wood; piscicultural uses; utilization of the resources in water; medical uses;
handicraft; cultural uses;
Data collection on vegetal resources (see "vegetation": phytomass used by men
and their domestic animals);
Techniques used: inputs participation (fertilizers and pesticides);
Identification of ongoing or potential threats related to practices.
1 Phytomasses are expressed in most cases in kg of dry matter (MS) per weather unit (vegetation
season, year ... ) and surface (ha, km'). LA! determination (Leaf Area Index) presents considerable
difficulties in the ecosystems of arid zones. This variable will be rarely taken into account in order
to satisfy eventually the demand of GTOS (Demonstration Project 'Terrestrial Ecosystem
Productivity").
