Mediterranean, whereas
wetter than normal
conditions occurred over
the western and middle
parts of the Black Sea
region, and Marmara and
Continental Central
Anatolia regions.
Extremely above normal
precipitation conditions
was observed over the
western Black Sea and
Marmara regions. In 1998,
above
normal
precipitation conditions
showed a spatial
coherence over most of
Turkey (Fig. ISb).
Precipitation anomalies
that are very much above
normal were apparent
throughout most of the
continental interiors of the
country. Below normal
precipitation conditions
dominated over eastern
and southern parts of the
Continental Eastern
Anatolia and Continental
Mediterranean regions.
Very much and extremely
below
normal
precIpitation anomalies
influenced the southeastern corner of Turkey.
Immediately
following this recovery
period, most areas of
Turkey, except the
western and middle parts
of the Black Sea region
and partly Continental
Central Anatolia, have
experienced another dry
period lasting up to now,
including January of
2001.
