precipitation anomaly index, which was previously used for Turkey, has been taken
into account. Description and classification of this index can be found in Tiirke~
(1996b).
During the period between the years of 1994 and 1998, precipitation of Turkey
has experienced a recovering situation towards near normal and/or above normal
conditions over most of the country, except the Continental Eastern Anatolia region.
For instance, in 1997, annual precipitation was generally near and/or above
normal over most of Turkey (Fig. 15a). Much below normal precipitation anomalies
dominated over the Continental Eastern Anatolia and eastern part of the Continental
