The inner limit of salt penetration (Fig. 5.5a,b) can be as far as 160 km north of the lagoon mouth, however a marked front is always formed around Ponta da Feitoria (60-80 km
from Praticagem) where the salinity gradient can reach 1 psu km- I • Weaker longitudinal gradients are found in the entrance channel up to 40 km from Praticagem.
The most important salt intrusion is seen during autumn between days 90 and 150
that occurs in a period when SW winds at 4 m S-I in average where predominant. It
can be noted that the fluctuations of salinity verified between Praticagem and Ponta
da Feitoria are not followed in the inner lagoon. In two occasions the displacement of
the front has reached the inlet region:
