Sugar Alcohols (Alditols)
Alkanepolyols obtained by reduction of sugars are generally characterized
by the systematic ending ... itol, e. g.: erythritol, ribitol, mannitol, etc.
Besides, these names are generally derived from the most senior (see preceding paragraph) parent sugar, e.g.: D-arabinitol (not D-Iyxitol), D-glucitol (not L-gulitol); the traditional name sorbitol is no longer recommended.
