Non-chromatographic separation. One where mass
transfer between phases reaches equilibrium one or
several times.
A technological trend to reducing the number of
steps traditionally involved in CMPs in order to
increase expeditiousness and decrease costs (Chap.
4,pp.175, 176, 195).
Client's issue that is to be solved or clarified and that,
as such, raises a need for information. Top level in
the hierarchy ofFig.l.S (Chap. 1, pp. 3,4,14).
S. "Extraction".
A type of analysis that provides qualitative and
quantitative information about the different forms
in which an analyte element may occur in a (usually
environmental) sample (Chap. 1, pp. 21, 30, 34).
S. "Uncertainty".
A tangible or intangible reference used to support
or perform analytical chemical measurements
(Chap. 3, pp. 101-116, l1S-125, 127-131, 133-135,
137,139-142).
Analytical chemical standard. Any of the standards
used in ordinary practice. Of the primary or secondary type (Chap. 3, pp. 101, 107, 110, 112, 113, 116,
117,139).
Base standard. A standard that coincides with one of
the seven SI base units. Only the kilogram prototype
is of the tangible type (Chap. 3, pp. 109, 110, 112, 116,
120,130,131,134,140).
Chemical standard. A standard that can be considered a (traceability) link between base (SI) standards and analytical chemical standards (Chap. 3,
pp.l0l, 107, 110-113, 116, 134, 137, 139; Fig. 3.6).
Primary analytical standard. A stable, homogeneous
substance of well-known properties that can be
directly related to a chemical standard via a traceability chain (Chap.3,pp.ll1, 113, 114, lIS, 119, 130).
Sample standard. An artificial, naturally occurring
or modified natural material intended to simulate as
closely as possible an actual sample and possessing
the properties of a reference material or certified
reference material (Chap. 3, pp. 116, lIS, 121, 12S,
130,134,137,140,141).
Secondary analytical standard. A substance that
lacks the properties required for direct use as an
analytical chemical standard but is used anyway
because an appropriate primary standard for the
