subjection (following size reduction) to a CMP. Of
the intuitive, statistical, directed or protocol-based
type (Chap. 4, pp. 146, 150, 153, 155-161, 173, 194,
195,199).
S. "Error".
The scheme used to ensure that the results of a CMP
will be consistent with the analytical problem
addressed (Chap. 4, pp. 156-158, 160, 194, 195).
S. "Standard".
Items of non-analytical information that characterize the performance of apparatuses and instruments in the analytical process. Lowest level in
the information hierarchy (Chap. 1, p. 22; Fig. 1.15).
S. "Sample".
A basic analytical property of an analytical method
defined as its ability to produce results exclusively
dependent on the analyte for its identification or
quantitation in the sample (Chap. 2, pp. 40, 56, 69,
70-72,77,79,80,81,88,89,95).
A parameter describing the selectivity of a method
with respect to another. Defined as the quotient of
the tolerated interferent-to-analyte ratios obtained
with the two methods in determining the same analyte (Chap. 2, p. 72).
A type of chemical analysis where the initial size of
the sample aliquot subjected to the CMP ranges
from 10 to 100 mg (Chap. 1, p. 32; Fig. 1.23).
To use a device responding to the presence or
concentration of an analyte in a sample. Entails
interacting with an instrument proper (Chap. 1,
p.23).
A portable, easy to use miniature device or instrument that responds to the presence or concentration of an analyte (or analyte family) in a
sample. Usually connected to or built into an instrument (Chap. 1, pp. 4,16,19,23,25,26).
An operation involving mass transfer between two
phases. A crucial element of the preliminary operations of a CMP. Discrete or continuous in nature
(Chap. I, pp. 30, 31, 35; Chap. 4, pp. 163,165,167,170,
172,194,195,199).
Chromatographic separation. One where distribution between phases reaches equilibrium many
times, thus significantly enhancing the separation
efficiency.
