5 Qualitative Aspects of Analytical Chemistry
I Seminar 5.4
The Use of Standards in Instrumental Qualitative Analysis
• Learning objective
To demonstrate different ways of using standards for comparisons in Instrumental Qualitative Analysis with a view to the identification of one or more
analytes.
• Literature
• Books on various instrumental techniques.
• Compilations of standard or official methods.
• Static instrumental techniques 1
• Identification by FTIR spectroscopy.
• Identification by mass spectrometry.
• Mixed identification (IR-MS).
• Dynamic instrumental techniques 1
• Identification by Gc.
• Identification by LC.
• Identification by GC-MS.
• Discussion
Once the specific CMPs have been chosen and described, discuss the use of
standards for the comparisons involved. Distinguish between method and
equipment calibration in each CMP. Comment on the differences between the
use of static and dynamic instrumental techniques in this context.
Suggested Readings
(1) "Quality Control in Analytical Chemistry", 2nd edn, G. Katemans and L.
Buydens, Wiley, New York, 1993.
Contains the chemometric foundations of the binary response and its errors.
About Classical Inorganic Qualitative Analysis
(2) "Quimica Analitica Cualitativa", F. Burriel, F. Lucena, S. Arribas and J.
Hernandez Mendez, Paraninfo, Madrid (Spain), 1988.
(3) "Analisis Inorganico Cualitativo Sistematico", F. Buscarons, F. Capitan
Garcia and F. Capitan Vallvey, Reverte, Barcelona (Spain), 1986.
(4) "Analisis Cualitativo Inorganico sin Empleo del Acido Sulfhidrico", S.
Arribas, Grdficas Summa, Oviedo (Spain), 1974.
(5) "Tecnicas Experimentales de Analisis Cualitativo", F. Pino Perez, Ediciones
Urmo, Bilbao (Spain), 1979.
I Rather than describing the analytical technique involved, discuss the identification process
in each case, with emphasis on the significance of standards.
