Seminar
(B) Use of straightforward
instruments
B.l Reflectance measurements
(reagent strips)
B.2 Spectrophotometric measurements
(reagent -containing vials)
B.3. Miscellaneous
• Description and discussion of each case
For one or two tests of each type:
• Describe the procedure.
• Discuss the chemical foundation of the test.
• Establish the scope of application (target analytes).
• Justify use according to sample type and specific information needs.
Seminar S.3
Use of Reagent Strips in Routine Clinical Analyses
(Combur-10-Test M, from Boehringer)
• Learning objective
243
• To demonstrate the multiparameter determination capacity of a reagent
strip for the rapid monitoring of lO routine clinical parameters in urine.
• To emphasize the expeditiousness with which the response of this
screening system can be obtained.
• Material
The detailed instructions supplied by the manufacturer to describe the
procedure, which includes the use of human senses (comparison with a
colour scale) and of a reflection photometer. The results are not always coincident. The output is (a) a binary response or (b) a concentration range
(a semi-quantitative response).
• Parameters (urine)
Density, pH, leucocytes, nitrite, protein, glucose, ketone bodies, urobilinogens,
bilirubin and blood.
• Description and discussion
• Describe the procedure (CMP).
• Discuss the (bio )chemical foundation of each test.
• Discuss the two forms of measurement (visual and instrumental).
• Comment on the two ways of expressing the results.
• Discuss the need for blanks.
• Identify potential interferences with each test.
• Comment on the clinical significance of the result for each test.
