could be combined with an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction in one
pot providing tricyclic carbon frameworks under control of five carboncarbon bonds and up to eight stereocenters. In addition N-heterocyclic
carbenes were successfully used in asymmetric benzoin reactions. The first asymmetric intramolecular crossed aldehyde-ketone benzoin reaction was developed yielding α-hydroxy tetralone and -indanone derivatives. This new principle could be extended to the asymmetric synthesis 3-hydroxy 4-chromanones demonstrating an efficient entry
to bioactive natural product synthesis possessing this structural motif.
The fast developing field of organocatalysis will yield new routes and
versatile synthetic methods, which can be applied in biomimetic processes.
