2.3 Future of geomatics standardisation

tioned whether GML 3.0 is needed to become an ISO standard too. Presently the ISO
project 19136 (Geography Markup Language) is still under development.
Many member countries and liaison organizations of ISO/TC211 will adopt the
implementation ofthe ISO 19100 standards from the OGc.
2.3.2 Ongoing work of ISO/TC211
Though the major standards of the ISO 19100 family have been completed the
work of the ISO/TC211 is ongoing. The present projects focus on the implementation of the completed work or address new fields such as the Location Based Mobile
Services.
The standardisation projects mentioned in this chapter are implementationoriented and in the early stage of a New Work Hem Proposal (Spring 2003).
ISO 19101-2
The ISO 19101-2 (Imagery reference model) extends the reference model ofISO
19101 towards geographie imagery and gridded data applications. Imagery and gridded data are the dominant form of geographie information in terms ofvolume. However, ISO standardisation of geomatics focused on the world of vector data in the
first phase and thus the necessity to rethink the models already created. A similar
update of an existing standard takes place with the ISO 19115 (Metadata).
ISO 19115-2
The ISO 19115-2 (Metadata - Part 2: Metadata for imagery and gridded data) is a
complementary standard to the existing ISO 19115 (Metadata) and will define metadata elements to support imagery, and gridded data. H will support the collection and
processing of natural and synthetic imagery and their derived products. To permit the
development of ISO 19115 to proceed, inc1usion of metadata definitions for imagery
and gridded data was deferred until the framework for these data was more fully
specified.
ISO 19137
The ISO 19137 (Generally used profiles of the spatial schema and of similar important other schemas) is in the early stage of a New Work Hem Proposal. This future standard shall support the creation of profiles and application schemas in particular of the ISO 19107 (Spatial schema), the ISO 19108 (Temporal schema), the
ISO 19111 (Spatial referencing by coordinates), and the ISO 19118 (Encoding).
Those profiles and application schemas shall integrate existing standards and defacta standards such as GeoVRML, ALKIS (Germany), Interlis (Switzerland), and
DIGEST (NATO) into the world ofISO 19100 standards.
