feature association
relationship that links instances of one feature type with instances of the same or a

NOTE 1
A feature association may occur as a type or an instance. Feature
association type or feature association instance is used when only one is meant.

feature attribute
characteristic of a feature (IS034 2002)
EXAMPLE 1
A feature attribute named "colour" may have an attribute value
"green" which belongs to the data type "text".
EXAMPLE 2
A feature attribute named "length" may have an attribute value
"82.4" which belongs to the data type "real".
NOTE 1
A feature attribute has a name, a data type, and a value domain associated to it. A feature attribute for a feature instance also has an attribute value
taken from the value domain.
NOTE 2
In a feature catalogue, a feature may include a value domain but
does not specify attribute values for feature instances.
feature catalogue
catalogue containing definitions and descriptions of the features types, feature attributes, and feature relationships, occurring in one or more sets of geographic data, together with any feature operations that may be applied (lS034 2002)
feature division
feature succession in which a previously existing feature is replaced by two or more
distinct feature instances ofthe same feature type (lS040 2002)
EXAMPLE
An instance of the feature type "land parcel" is replaced by two instances ofthe same type when the parcel is legally subdivided.
feature fusion
feature succession in which two or more previously existing instances of a feature
type are replaced by a single instance ofthe same feature type (lS040 2002)
EXAMPLE
Two instances of the feature type "pasture" are replaced by a single
instance when the fence between the pastures is removed.
feature operation
operation that every instance of a feature type may perform (lS034 2002)
EXAMPLE 1
An operation upon the feature type "dam" is to raise the dam. The
result ofthis operation is to raise the level ofwater in areservoir.
EXAMPLE 2
An operation by the feature type "dam" might be to block vessels
from navigating along a watercourse.
NOTE
Feature operations provide a basis for feature type definition.
