The SCAR coordinates scientific activities regarding the Antarctic. One of their
current projects is the creation of a spatial data model for the continent. The SCAR is
an organization open to governmental and non-governmental members.

The principal objectives of SCAR are:
• to initiate, promote, and coordinate international scientific activity in the Antarctic with a view to framing and renewing sc ientific programs of circumpolar scope and significance,
• to continue to review scientific matters pertaining to the integrity of the Antarctic environment, including the conservation of
its terrestrial and marine ecosystems,
• to provide, upon request, scientific and technological advice to
the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings and other organizations, both govemmental and non-governmental.
