3 Non-geometry standards
speeifieation is eomplementary to the standards ISO 19113 and ISO 19114 that define an abstract framework for the deseription ofthe quality of geographie data.
3.3 Imagery standards
The topie of imagery ineludes all geographie data that are stored in an image in
the widest sense. The image may display a part ofthe earth's surfaee or it may eontain other fairly evenly spaeed data of the earth's surfaee or its neighbourhood. Examples for imagery-type data are airbome photographs, satellite images, hydrographie soundings, digital elevation models, and eoverages aeeording to ISO 19123.
3.3.1 Framework (ISO 19129, 150ITR 19121, ISOIRS 19124)
When the work on ISO-standardisation of geomaties started, a great variety of
raster data formats was in use already. Examples are JPEG and TIFF. Therefore, ISO
standardisation for imagery started with a eomprehensive review of industry- and
other de-faeto-standards. The results are a teehnieal report (ISO/TR 19121), a review
summary (ISOIRS 19124) and a framework standard (ISO 19129) that finally determines the further proeedure. The eoneept ofiSO 19129 eontains the distribution of
imagery elements to existing ISO 19100 standards, the definition ofNew Work Item
Proposals (NWIPs) that wi111ead to new ISO 19100 standards, and eventually the
standardisation ofremaining topies within ISO 19129.
ISO 19129 (Imagery, gridded and coverage data framework)
The ISO 19129 is a framework standard for all eoverage, irnagery, and gridded
data of geographie information. The term in the tide with the broadest definition is
"eoverage". This term refers to geographie data that covers a region in some regular
or irregular spatial order. The simplest order is a square grid, weil known from digital images or digital elevation models. Thus, the eoneept of eoverage data ineludes
imagery and gridded data. A eoverage is also eonsidered as a kind of gridded data as
weil as a method for describing spatial phenomena that inelude concepts of vector
and raster data. Coverages are explained in chapter 3, sections 3.4 and in chapter 4,
section 5.
The ISO 19129 standardises all details that are necessary to handle gridded data in
the environment of geomaties unless other standards of the ISO 19100 family have
already done so. A elose relation exists with the ISO 19130 (Sensor and data models
for imagery and gridded data) that deals with the geometrie relation of imagery data
to the earth. Two "spin-off-standards" have already been defined, ISO 19101-2 (Imagery reference model) and ISO 19115-2 (Metadata - Part 2: Metadata for imagery
and gridded data).
