Evaluation of Ecological Effects of the North Sea
necessary for the economic viability of the vessel. The main sandeel fishing areas are
illustrated in Fig. 9 for 1993 (landings by Denmark and Norway) and Fig. 10 for 1994
(landings by Denmark, Norway and United Kingdom). The plots use a geostatistical
gridding method (Journel, 1989; Cressie, 1990) to express nodes around which
concentrated fishing takes place. Hot spots occur on grounds to the west of Denmark
which produces the greatest quantities and this coincides with the need for quality fish
to the factories; the closer to home the shorter the steaming time to the factory the
fresher the fish will be. Dogger Bank, Wee Bankie off the river Forth Estuary in
Scotland (from which landings have only recently developed although a Russian
fishery previously existed here in the 1960s) and the Buchan coast off Scotland derive
additional catches which in some years can match the tonnages taken from
Danish/Norwegian waters.
Haddock consume large quantities of sandeel. Haddock are mainly
concentrated from the middle to the west side of the North Sea south of 56.5°N latitude
and across the entire North Sea north of this latitude. Heavy concentrations of haddock
are associated with masses of sandeels at the Northumberland coast, Wee Bankie and
northwards along the Scottish coast including Orkney and Shetland waters.
