Arctic Coastal and Marine Environmental Monitoring

strict policies for controlling the exploration and exploitation of these Arctic waters are
established and enforced by the Russian Republics.
The main goals of this project have been to promote the benefits of GIS
technology for environmental impact assessment within a remote region of the Arctic
which, in the near future, will be exposed to ever increasing risk for environmental
damage as a result of hydrochemical developments. At the same time Akvaplan-niva
have acquired a considerable amount of experience and expertise, and have amassed a
large amount of environmental data that could form a base for environmental
monitoring surveys in this part of the Arctic. The benefits have been two-fold in that
Akvaplan-niva developed a GIS as an interactive interface to their environmental
database, and at the same time demonstrated the analysis, and modelling potential of
GIS for EIA and as a decision analysis tool.
