package. Other maps were then produced displaying critical water levels above the
current high water mark. The current level to which flood protection is provided in the
Clyde estuary is 5.0 metres above mean high water level. Maps were produced for a
variety of potential flood situations, the example shown in Fig. 2 shows the flood zone
that would result from a water level 44 cm above current protection level, this situation
represented a freak storm surge condition.
The resolution of detail contained in the initial maps provided a broadly
satisfactory indication of areas of land adjacent to the estuary over which water could
