Distribution: Temperate regions of the
northern hemisphere, North America.
Habitat: Marshes, swamps, wet meadows, and stream margin; moist soil.
Description: It is an herbaceous perennial species growing up to 80 cm tall on
hollow, branching stems. Upper stem
leaves are smaller and stalkless. Leaves
are rounded to heart shaped and are
3–20 cm across, with a bluntly serrated margin and a thick, waxy texture.
Bright, shiny, five- or six-part yellow
flowers (2.5–5.0 cm diameter) have
five to nine waxy deep yellow petallike sepals. All parts of this species
are edible if boiled (Missouri Botanical
Garden).
