35
Order: Batrachospermales
Family: Lemaneaceae
Common name: Not available.
Distribution: Northern hemisphere;
Europe: Belgium, France, Germany,
Romania, and Spain; North America:
California (AlgaeBase).
Habitat: Fast-flowing and turbulent
waters.
Description: Plants are unstalked
and unbranched, with multicellular
thallus measuring a total length of
11.1 cm. It is an agarophyte producing hydrocolloid agar in its cell walls.
It has tetrasporangia and a filamentous gonimoblast. Cells have multiple
nuclei and plastids, but without flagella and centrioles. Chloroplasts lack
external endoplasmic reticulum. Triphasic alternation of generations is
seen in its life history (Marine Species
Dictionary).
