Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (Ralfs ex Bornet &
Flahault Nevada)
Order: Nostocales
Family: Nostocaceae
Common name: Blue-green algae.
Distribution: Europe, North America,
Southwest Asia, Asia, Australia and
New Zealand.
Habitat: Lakes, rivers, brackish waters.
Description: This species grows to form
single cells (akinetes) or single, straight,
and unbranched filaments that may
aggregate into large spindle- or flakelike colonies (up to 3 × 30 mm), resulting in small “glass blades.” Filaments
without sheaths (trichomes) are tapered
at both ends, with end cells usually
longer than the central cells. Cells are
5–6  µm wide and 5–15  µm long with
gas vacuoles. Wall of the filament is
smooth and colorless. This species is
used as a valuable dietary supplement
(Baker, 2012; Laamanen et al., 2002).
