Distribution: Eurasia: Caspian Basin;
eastern Black Sea (Kottelat and Freyhof,
2007).
Habitat: Marine; freshwater; brackish;
large and deep rivers.
Description: This species has an elongated, bulky body with a long head.
It has the characteristic 8–18 dorsal
scutes, 24–50 lateral scutes, and 6–12
ventral scutes. Color of the body is dark
blue-black on back with white-cream
starry bony platelets to white on ventral
side. There are four barbels, which are
closer to the end of the snout than the
mouth. It grows to a maximum length
of 242 cm and weight of 70 kg (Kottelat
and Freyhof, 2007; Pond Life).
