Common name: Coho salmon.
Distribution: North Pacific: Russia,
Japan, Alaska, and Bay in Baja California, Mexico (Pablico, 1997c).
Habitat: First half of their life cycle
is in streams and small freshwater
tributaries; spawning in small streams;
remainder of the life cycle is in estuarine and marine waters.
Description: This species is characterized by the presence of small black
spots on the back and on the upper
lobe of the caudal fin, and by the lack
of dark pigment along the gum line
of the lower jaw. Gill rakers are rough
and widely spaced. Lateral line is
nearly straight. Adipose fin is slender.
Individuals in the sea are dark metallic
blue or greenish on the back and upper
sides, a brilliant silver color on middle
and lower sides, and white below. Small
black spots are present on the back and
upper sides and on the upper lobe of
the caudal fin. This species grows to a
maximum size of 108 cm and 15.2 kg
(Pablico, 1997c).
