Oncorhynchus gorbuscha Walbaum 1792

Common name: Pink salmon.
Distribution: Arctic and Pacific drainages from Mackenzie River delta,
Northwest Territories, Canada, to Sacramento River drainage, in California;
occasionally as far as La Jolla, southern
California; also in Northeast Asia. On
Asia side, from North Korea to Jana
and Lena drainages in Artic Russia
(Torres, 1991i).
Habitat: Freshwater, brackish water,
and marine water; diadromous; streams
and rivers.
Description: This species is distinguished by the presence of large black
spots on the back and on both lobes of the
caudal fin. Body is fusiform, streamlined,
and somewhat laterally compressed. It
is, however, moderately deeper in breeding males. Mouth is large, terminal, and
directed upwards and forward. Upper
jaw reaches the posterior edge of orbit.
Snout is rounded and narrow. Lips are
fleshy and teeth are small and weak.
However, in breeding males mouth
becomes enlarged with well-developed
teeth. Further, upper jaw in these males
becomes hooked downwards. Adipose
fin is large. Pelvic fins have axillary process. Fish in the sea are steel blue to bluegreen on the back, silver on the sides,
and white on the belly. Large oval spots
are present on the back, adipose fin, and
both lobes of the caudal fin. It grows to a
maximum length of 76 cm and weight of
6.8 kg (Torres, 1991i).
