Common name: Indian river shad.
Distribution: Asia: India, Bangladesh,
Nepal, and Pakistan (Bailly, 1997d).
Habitat: Restricted to lowland, slowflowing rivers, with sandy beds; ponds,
beels, ditches, and inundated fields.
Description: Body is fairly deep and
ventral profile is more convex than
dorsal. Insertion of pelvic fins is just
before dorsal fin origin. Upper jaw has
a distinct median notch at center. Scales
are small and 77–91 scales are seen in
lateral series. A dark blotch is noticed
behind the gill opening, often followed
by a series of spots along the flank (Das
et al., 2012).

Common name: Ganges river sprat.
Distribution: Asia: Indonesia, Brunei,
Malaysia, and India (Bailly, 1997c).
Habitat: Rivers and estuaries and coastal
areas.
Description: Body of the species is
elongated and laterally compressed.
Body is keeled with 11 + 7 scutes. There
are 19–21 lower gill rakers. Last two
rays of the anal fin form a separate
finlet. There are 40–43 scales in lateral
series. Caudal fin is forked and its lower
lobe is slightly longer than the upper
lobe. Body is brownish. A faint lateral
band runs longitudinally. Caudal fin is
with faint edges and a faint black spot is
seen at its base (Chaki, 2013).
