Common name: Asian stinging catfish.
Distribution: Asia: Pakistan and Sri
Lanka to Myanmar (Susan, 1988a).
Habitat: Ponds, ditches, swamps, and
marshes.
Description: Body of this species is
elongated and compressed. Head is
depressed and covered with an osseous
plate at top and sides of the head. There
are four pairs of barbels. Caudal fin is
rounded. Body color is reddish brown
or purplish brown. Matured specimens
are, however, black in color. Using its
swim bladder, it can breathe atmospheric air to a certain extent, allowing
it to survive in some fairly hostile conditions. This species reaches a maximum
size of 30 cm (SeriouslyFish, 2014b).
