Family: Percidae
Common name: Pike-perch.
Distribution: Europe and Asia: Caspian, Baltic, Black, and Aral Sea Basins;
Elbe (North Sea Basin) and Maritza
(Aegean Basin) (Luna, 1988r).
Habitat: Freshwater and brackish water;
large, turbid rivers and eutrophic lakes,
brackish coastal lakes and estuaries.
Description: Body of this species is
elongated. Snout is pointed and head
length is greater than depth of body
or equal to it. Upper jaw extends past
eye level. There are two dorsal fins;
the first one is spiny and separated by
a narrow interspace from the second.
Anal fin has two to three spines. Pelvic
fins are widely spaced; the distance
between them is almost as great as
the base of one fin. Lateral line is with
84–95 scales. Color of body is greenish
gray or brown on the back, becoming
lighter on the lower sides and white on
the belly. This species grows to a maximum size of 1 m and 20 kg (FAO, 2014g;
Luna, 1988r).
