Distribution: Western Indian Ocean:
India and Sri Lanka (Bindu, 2006).
Habitat: Brackish water but known to
tolerate freshwater or marine water for
short periods: large rivers, reservoirs,
lagoons, and estuaries.
Description: Body of this species is
deep and laterally compressed. Mouth
is small and terminal with a small cleft.
Snout is spout-like. Eyes are large and
lateral. Lips are thin and jaws are equal.
Dorsal fin is inserted above the pectoral fin base. Caudal fin is emarginated,
while pelvic fin is characterized with
one spine. As in all cichlids, the lateral
line is interrupted in this species, too.
The lateral line has 6–18 scales after
which it continues as a small round
hole in each scale. Body color is light
greenish with eight yellowish oblique
bands. Scales above the lateral line have
a central pearly spot and possess some
triangular black spots on the abdomen.
Fins, except the pectoral, are of a dark
leaden color, while the pectoral is yellowish with a jet black base. It grows to
a maximum size of 40 cm (Bindu, 2006).
