Common name: Spotted snakehead.
Distribution: Afghanistan, eastward
through Khyber Pass into Indus River
Basin, Pakistan; rivers of the plains
of India; Sri Lanka; southern Nepal;
Bangladesh; Myanmar; eastward to
Yunnan Province, southwestern China
(USGS, 2012a).
Habitat: Stagnant waters and muddy
streams on plains; muddy waters up to
600 m.
Description: Body of this species is
elongated and mostly rounded. Pelvic
fins are more than half the length of
pectoral fins, extending to anal fin.
Pectoral fins are plain without vertical
bands. Caudal fin is rounded. Mouth
is large and lower jaw has three to six
canines behind a single row of villiform teeth. Colors of live fish vary from
black to pale green on the dorsum, and
sides and ventral sides are white to pale
yellow, sometimes with a red tinge.
Several dark blotches are seen on lower
sides, and occasionally black spots are
present on the body and dorsal, anal,
and caudal fins. Dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are dark gray, sometimes with
a reddish edge. Pectoral and pelvic fins
are pale orange. This species grows to a
maximum size of 31 cm (USGS, 2012a).
