Systomus sarana Hamilton 1822 (= Puntius sarana)

Common name: Olive barb.
Distribution: Native to Afghanistan,
Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh,
Bhutan and Sri Lanka; Thailand and
Myanmar.
Habitat: Sandy bed mixed with mud
and in fairly swift current.
Description: Body of this species is deep
and moderately compressed. Dorsal
profile is elevated. Eyes are large and
situated in the anterior half of the head,
and snout is rounded. Two pairs of nostrils are present, and the nostrils of each
pair are separated by a muscular  flap.
Mouth is wide, and pores are absent on
the snout. Two pairs of barbels are present. Rostral barbels are slightly shorter
than the maxillary pair. Pelvics originate
below the origin of the dorsal fin. Color
of body is silvery in the back. Opercle is
shot with gold and yellowish and white
in the abdomen. It reaches a maximum
size of 42 cm (Rahman, 1989).

Habitat: Freshwater and brackish water;
large estuaries and their large, freshened
plume waters; coastal lakes connected
to rivers and lowland stretches of large
rivers.
Description: Body of this species is
almost cylindrical with a depth of
19–26% standard length. Abdomen is
posterior to pelvic, which is rounded.
Snout is rounded and stout. Mouth
is subterminal. Dorsal fin has 9–10.5
