CRABS
Potamon potamios Olivier 1804
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Crustacea
Order: Decapoda
Family: Potamidae
Common name: Freshwater crab,
semiterrestrial crab.
Distribution: Eastern Mediterranean,
including many Mediterranean islands,
extending as far south and west as
the Sinai Peninsula (Cumberlidge, 2008a).
Habitat: Streams, rivers, and lakes.
Description: In this species, epigastric
crests are only a little in advance of
post-orbitals and are parallel to them.
Post-orbitals are running in a straight
line at right angles to the long axis of
the carapace, hardly interrupted, or
angulate at the anterior end of the cervical groove. The eighth thoracic sternite
is incompletely separated by a longitudinal median line, and fused anteriorly
at the suture between sternites 7 and 8
by a narrow transverse ridge interrupting the longitudinal line. Unlike other
brachyuran crabs, the species of this
family have no larval stages in their life
history. Females lay only a few large
eggs, which hatch directly into young
crabs (Annandale and Kemp, 2013).
