Common name: Red swamp crayfish.
Distribution: From northern Mexico to
Escambia County in Florida, north to
southern Illinois and Ohio (Crandall,
2010a).
Habitat: Wet meadows, subterranean
karst systems, seasonal swamps and
marshes, permanent lakes and streams,
rice paddy fields, and irrigation channels and reservoirs.
Description: Body shape of this species
is cylindrical. Cephalothorax is conspicuously granular (roughened) in adults,
provided with numerous small tuberculi, and also having strong cervical,
cephalic, branchiostegal, and marginal
spines. Rostrum is long with margins
that are straight and convergent. Chelae
are narrow and long, notched in proximal portion of the dactyl, leaving a gap
and delimited by a tubercle. Large tubercle is seen at the opposite end of the gap
on fixed finger. Large scarlet tubercles
are seen on the palm and fingers. Color
in adults is dark red, some in shades of
brown. A wedge-shaped black stripe
is present on the abdomen. Chelae are
with bright red tubercles (McAlain and
Romaire, 2007).
