approved for registration and use in agriculture so far (Anonymous, 1980) (Table
10.2). The government has licensed the production of 82,135 tons of various
pesticides; out of which a capacity for 67,474 tons has already been installed.
At present 23 units are engaged in manufacturing technical-grade pesticides and
about 50 units are preparing formulations based on technical-grade pesticides
produced indigenously or imported. The quantity and value of pesticides produced in the organized sector during the year 1976-1977 is given in Table 10.3.
The production oftechnical material in 1977 was 40,685 tons. The actual installed
capacity of important technical pesticides in 1977 is shown in Fig. 10.2. In
addition, about 350 units in the small-scale sector undertake the manufacture of
conventional formulations, mainly dust powder (360,000 metric tons) and, to
a limited extent, wettable powder (90,000 metric tons), emulsifiable concentrates
(45,000 metric tons), and granules (3750 metric tons). A few sophisticated
pesticides are also allowed to be imported to cope with the qualitative changes
in the cropping pattern inherent to the program of intensive cultivation of cereals,
legumes, cotton, tobacco, coffee, and tea. Total imports during 1976-1977 were
approximately 6106.2 tons (Anonymous, 1978a, 1979a).
