1974, approximately 20.4 million pounds of pesticides was used, equivalent to
0.68 million pounds per year. From 1974 to 1977, insecticides totaled 5.1 million
pounds or the equivalent of 1.7 million pounds per year (Tables 7.1 and 7.2).
Insecticide use patterns as a function of total pounds used (Table 7.2) should
be interpreted cautiously. The values reported are predominantly from largescale uses but include insecticides reported on experimental-use permits. Carbaryl
is the only insecticide that is registered with EPA for control of the four major
