the desert environment, and the expense associated with installation and repairs
by a specialized expatriate crew.
A schematic view of the landfill is shown in Fig. 1. The landfill contains an
impermeable base and cover comprised of two layers of asphalt concrete, a
vapor-monitoring system for leak detection, and a layer of sulfhur between the
liners to act as a mercury immobilization barrier. In addition, both cap and base
are designed to allow for the injection of sealants to provide additional
containment should leaks be detected in the future. The total volume of
contaminated material which had to be disposed of in the landfill is 15000 m 3 .
Due to the placement of concrete blocs, only few voids were left, which were filled
with sulfhur and sand. Since the disposed material is cast into concrete, no
settlement can occur which could cause ruptures in the landfill cover.
The groundwater is located about 60 m below the ground surface, which
provides a high level of protection in the unlikely case of mercury leakages.
Monitoring of surrounding soil and vegetation was performed before and during
the expected 2 years of landfill operations to determine any off-site contamination.
