Basic Study on the Remediation Technology

As a catalyst, iron chloride was added to each artificially contaminated soil
made for the tests. The amount of iron chloride added to the soil was equal to, 10
times greater than, and 100 times greater than the amount of mercury mol
(5 x 10- 5 mol) in the soil.
4. Contaminated soil from a site in Japan and the iron chloride.
As a catalyst, iron chloride was added to 5 g of contaminated soil from a site in
Japan. The amount of iron chloride added to the soil was equal to and ten times
greater than the amount of mercury mol in the contaminated soil.

Accuracy of the Tests by Reaction System
The above tests, in which various reaction systems were used, were repeated two
or three times. The test results are average values. Repeat test values were
determined as follows.
Before determining the number of samplings for each repeat test sample, it was
necessary to understand the uniformity of the artificially contaminated soil made
for the tests and the contaminated soil from a site in Japan. Therefore, mercury
concentrations in the standard sand, volcanic ash soil, and contaminated soil
from a site were measured to check for uniformity. Artificially contaminated soils
were made with the standard sand and volcanic ash soil using the procedures
outlined in process (1) above. In the analysis, eight 0.2-0.3 g samples were taken
from each test sample. After the artificially contaminated soils were wetdecomposed with acid, total mercury concentration was measured. Table 3 shows
deviations in the analysis. Therefore, the total mercury concentrations of each
repeat test sample were determined by analyzing total mercury concentration
with three samples from each repeat test sample and by calculating average
values.
