Fifth Stage. The last degradation stage close to the smelter works was
characterized by the occurrence of bare land. The area of bare land reached ca. 8
m>, occurring among the patches of monocoenoses of Calamagrostis epigeios.
The surfaces are covered by a lS-20-cm-thick layer of undecomposed dead plants
from preceding years. The soil contamination was high, the mercury levels
reached 200-23S mg/kg. Due to the S02 emissions, soil pH reached 4.0, although
the parent rock is limestone.
