Integration of equation (1) yields:
D =
Κ^ΚΊ
[expi-K!t)-exp(-K 2 t)] + ^
P )
Γΐ - exp(-K 2 t)l
+ D 0 .exp(-K 2 t)
in which:
D Q = initial D.O. deficit
(2)
Equations (1) and (2) differ from the original O'Connell-Thomas model used by
Symons, only by the addition of B, the benthic demand, which cannot be neglected in
the specific case of Alexander Stream.
The Four-Probe Method
One of the three probes was placed in a black container that prevented admission of
both light and air (K 2 = 0 and P = O). A second was enclosed in a clear plastic container
which admitted light but not air (K 2 = 0 and P Φ 0), and the third D.O. probe was
unconfined (K 2 Φ 0 and P Φ 0). A computer program was used for the evaluation of the
five constants K 1? K 2 , P, R and L Q . As a modification of Symons' method a fourth D.O.
probe was used for the evaluation of the benthic D.O. demand.
