pursuit
for needle sh schools. Since the food items are active
swimmers,
C. hz'ppurus
must therefore, depend on its speed for
catching tts prey. This behaviour was often seen during the course of
this study.
The availability of the major food items, S.auritcz and B.belone
may allow C. hippurus to search for these two abundant species
rather than expend greater energy in pursuing other food items, this
was
emphas1zed by LEVENS (1968). He indicated that the relative
importance of searching and pursuing is partey a property of the
biology of the animal and partey a property of the abundance of food
items.
.
This is clear from the results that there were only a few food
items constituting C. hippurus diet, especially S.aurila and B. belone,
which
may reduce the feeding pressure on other food items, resulting
in low diversity of food items of C. hippurus.
C0rphaena hippurus is an important sh in the local sh
markets (second class sh), and because of its abundance in Tripoli
coasts during the shing season. August through October, it could
support very good sheries; and in order to obtain a high catch of this
sh, the authors suggest the following points.
1- The improvement of oat technique to catch this sh. The use of
foats in
a proper way to catch C. hippurus is not documented before
in Libya, however, a primitive way is used by local shermen and it is
explained in the methodology of this work (Fig 1).
2— Exmploitation of offshore shing grounds where large sizes of C.
hz‘;murus are present.
3— Increasing the number of trained shermen.
The anthors feel that, in order to know the biology of this
sh
in libyan waters, future studies shold be conducted. These studies may
in’clude morphometric measurements, rnigratin, sexing, and spawmng
grounds.
